112 is the single emergency telephone number for the European Union. The number was established by Council Decision of 29 July 1991 and reinforced through subsequently adopted legislation namely the Directive 98/10/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 February 1998 on the application of open network provision (ONP) to voice telephony and on universal service for telecommunications in a competitive environment. European citizens in distress situations should be able to call the 112 and get through to the emergency services in all Member States. Thus, anyone travelling within the Union has to remember only one number and this guarantees a quicker and more efficient intervention. The purpose of this website is to attract as many emergency service participants as possible, with the intention to share information and to provide the larger public with information of different emergency services in Europe. Especially the ones connected to the single European emergency call number 112. Hopefully this mutual information website will make it possible for many emergency services to improve their ability to communicate with eachother and with the public. This website will also allow emergency services to learn from eachother and to improve the coordination between emergency help resources in Europe. The target group for this website is all types of emergency services in Europe. And of course the public! |
